Mapping the thousands of Missouri sinkholes

ST. LOUIS -- There is a reason that Missouri is known as the Cave State. There are thousands of sinkholes and caves. Many of them are formed when limestone rock is washed away by groundwater. This is a process that has been happening for millions of years, and conditions are favorable in Missouri for them to keep forming. More are being discovered every day.University of Missouri Geology Professor Martin Appold tells KREI radio that the sinkholes are spread throughout the state. There are around 16,000 and many of them are clustered in the southwest portions of the state. You can find them near Springfield, West Plains, and the Lake of the Ozarks. Around 250,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into the Los Angeles River, forcing the closure of all Long Beach open coastal beaches, authorities announced late Thursday.The spill occurred in Downey after equipment used by a Los Angeles County Sanitation District crew malfunctioned, “causing a temporary blockage in the sewer,” the City of Downey said.The blockage overflowed into the street at Burns Avenue and Rives Avenue, and ultimately into the river.“Although our staff worked to set up containment to prevent sewage from reaching receiving waters, we estimate that 250,000 gallons of sewage reached the Los Angeles River before our crews could fully contain the sewage that spilled into a local storm drain,” the City of Downey said.Despite the warning signs, a KTLA news crew saw several people swimming and wading in the polluted water. The Huntington Park Police Department has identified a suspect in the murder of a man who was beaten to death outside Pacific Plaza on Pacific Boulevard early Friday morning. Miguel Zavaleta, 29, was named by Huntington Park Police and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department as “the sole suspect” in the homicide. He is a 5-foot-11 Hispanic man who weighs 220 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes. He is well known for frequenting the Huntington Park area. The United States Coast Guard captured 15 undocumented migrants attempting to enter the United States in Orange County on Thursday, officials said. The USCG cutter Forrest Rednour spotted an overloaded 36-foot sportfishing boat headed north near San Clemente at around 4:30 p.m., the Coast Guard said in a news release.
