Daniel Clowes sets the stage for his latest graphic novel, Monica, by jumping right into the deep end of history’s primordial slop — protozoa, dinosaurs, pharaohs, Christ, plague, Columbus, Hitler, the bomb, a dying JFK, and the Beverly Hillbillies all make colorful cameos on the opening pages. Then you start meeting the characters, including a soldier in Vietnam and his girl back home, Penny, who steps out with a snarky hipster painter fond of jerking the chains encumbering the bourgeoisie: “Don’t you love rich people? They’re so happy and they smell great! … We have to warn them about the revolution! ATTENTION BARONS OF INDUSTRY: DOOM IS NIGH! BOARD YOUR WINDOWS!”The flighty (not to say bipolar? schiz?) Penny moves from apartment to apartment and man to man and a couple of years later begets the book’s namesake, who spends much of her life seeking out the identity of her father. Finding success by following in her mother’s hippie-entrepreneurial footsteps when she opens a shop sell...Once facing life without parole, East Bay man took 11 years in Bay Point homicide

San Jose experiencing 3rd highest COVID wave ever right now, wastewater shows

As the countdown to 2024 approaches, Dwayne Taylor — the founder of San Jose events company Taylor Productions — is preparing to celebrate. For nearly a decade, he has hosted one of the city’s largest New Year’s parties. And for the first time since 2020, COVID-19 is finally feeling like less of an obstacle.“I’ve had it three times, and I’ve also had a lot of really close friends who passed away from COVID,” said Taylor, who suspended the parties in 2020 and 2021 before bringing it back last year. “So if I thought for a second that this party would be a problem or a spreader event, I would have canceled it in a heartbeat.”Despite the persistent presence of COVID-19 and an ongoing surge — hospitalizations are up, and so is the virus’ presence in wastewater — Taylor is among many Bay Area residents making the same calculus. Most are throwing masks and other precautions to the winds, and it’s not just revelers. She walked back her comments hours later.Asked during Wednesday night’s town hall in Berlin what she believed had caused the war — the first shots of which were fired in her home state of South Carolina — Haley talked about the role of government, replying that it involved “the freedoms of what people could and couldn’t do.”She then turned the question back to the man who had asked it. He replied that he was not the one running for president and wished instead to know her answer. After Haley went into a lengthier explanation about the role of government, individual freedom and capitalism, the questioner seemed to admonish Haley, saying, “In the year 2023, it’s astonishing to me that you answer that question without mentioning t...Single-family house sells for $1.7 million in Pleasanton
