‘Widespread rainfall’ headed to Bay Area on Friday, according to the National Weather Service

The Friday commute home could get a little messy for Bay Area residents as the National Weather Service predicted “widespread rainfall” in the afternoon that could linger well into Saturday, with potential thunderstorms sprinkled in.As much as one-full inch of rain was forecast in San Francisco and Concord on Friday in what’s expected to be the wettest day of a week which saw a couple of spouts of rainfall throughout the region. That prediction drops to upwards of .75 inches in Oakland and .5 in San Jose, but the consistent rain expected after about 1 p.m. should still be enough to slick roads.More rain's coming to our area today. Widespread rainfall begins this afternoon and continues overnight, with a chance of thunderstorms through Saturday afternoon. Plan for wet roads and allow more time for travel. #CAwx pic.twitter.com/mtxIIWMIdE— NWS Bay Area (@NWSBayArea) November 17, 2023Related ArticlesWeather | Friday thunderstorms possible around ...Cal football: Do the Bears have a big-game QB?

BERKELEY — Cal heads to Stanford on Saturday for the 126th Big Game with a still-beating postseason pulse and a young quarterback who plans to stick around for a while.Redshirt freshman Fernando Mendoza, a third-stringer when fall camp began, has led the Bears’ offense the past five games, helping them score at least 40 points in three of those. He faced a baptism by fire with four straight defeats to AP Top-25 opponents before Cal (4-6, 2-5 Pac-12) held off Washington State 42-39 last Saturday to end the skid and keep alive its hopes for bowl eligibility. The Bears need a win at Stanford and a week later at UCLA to do it, and no one is more convinced it will happen than Mendoza.“I want to win the next two games,” he said, “and after that I want to win the bowl game and then I win more games next year and be the best quarterback I can become. And one of the top in the nation.”(AP Photo/Godofredo A. Vásquez) (AP Photo/Godofredo A. CAN ANYONE IN BAY AREA BEAT ARCHBISHOP MITTY?No.WHAT MAKES MITTY SO DOMINANT?There are talented teams in the East Bay, South Bay, and Peninsula, but no program in the region can match Mitty’s superstar duo of five-star sophomore McKenna Woliczko and UConn-bound Morgan Cheli. Last year’s team lost one game to a Bay Area opponent, Piedmont, but that was early in the season with Cheli out with a foot injury. The 6-foot-2 point guard is fully healthy now and flanked by Woliczko and Los Gatos transfer Belle Bramer, they form a trio capable of torching anyone in coach Sue Phillips’ high-octane press. Elana Weisman, who averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds as a sophomore at Burlingame before transferring and taking a more supporting role at Mitty in 2022-23, is back for her senior year, too. AND THE BAY AREA’S SECOND-BEST TEAM IS …Crowning Mitty is a no-brainer, but figuring out who the second-best team in the Bay Area is much harder given the number of powerful programs. RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The United Nations was forced to stop deliveries of food and other necessities to Gaza on Friday and warned of the growing possibility of widespread starvation after internet and telephone services collapsed in the besieged enclave because of a lack of fuel.Israeli officials said the country’s War Cabinet approved for the first time allowing small, daily shipments of fuel into Gaza. Two container trucks a day of fuel would be let in for the U.N. to use in supporting water and sewage infrastructure, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity pending an official announcement.Israel has barred entry to fuel since the start of the war, saying it would be diverted by Hamas for military means. It has also barred food, water and other supplies except for a trickle of aid from Egypt that aid workers say falls far short of what’s needed. It was not clear if the fuel shipments could be used for other purposes, including powering the internet and phone ne...6 more officers charged in death of Christian Glass

Students in Broward County were back in class Friday morning after inclement weather caused colleges and schools in Broward to close out of an abundance of caution. After a day of cleanup in Broward County, schools like Pompano Beach Middle, were dry once again and clear of debris. A tree on Thursday fell on top of the school. Several other schools suffered damage on the inside. Nova High School in Davie had water leaking from the ceiling and Western High School’s auditorium was flooded. Standing water was also a common sight at most schools. Western High’s baseball field was flooded, as well as the football field at American Heritage in Plantation. Over at Northeast High School, parking lots looked like lakes. All the issues caused by relentless rainfall Wednesday night, prompted Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Peter Licata to shut down schools on Thursday.
