'Please do something': Kids' private files dumped online after school hacks

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 01:23:01 GMT

The confidential documents stolen from schools and dumped online by ransomware gangs are raw, intimate and graphic. They describe student sexual assaults, psychiatric hospitalizations, abusive parents, truancy — even suicide attempts.“Please do something,” begged a student in one leaked file, recalling the trauma of continually bumping into an ex-abuser at a school in Minneapolis. Other victims talked about wetting the bed or crying themselves to sleep.Complete sexual assault case folios containing these details were among more than 300,000 files dumped online in March after the 36,000-student Minneapolis Public Schools refused to pay a $1 million ransom. Other exposed data included medical records, discrimination complaints, Social Security numbers and contact information of district employees.Rich in digitized data, the nation’s schools are prime targets for far-flung criminal hackers, who are assiduously locating and scooping up sensitive files that not long ago were committed to...

It’s time to accept that higher mortgage rates are here to stay

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 01:23:01 GMT

(NerdWallet) - The era of low mortgage rates is over. Embracing this reality will hasten your owning a house that meets your needs.Low rates flourished for 11 years, as the 30-year mortgage remained below 5% from February 2011 to April 2022. Since then, it has remained mostly above 5%, averaging 6.72% in June in Freddie Mac's weekly survey. Some forecasters predict that rates will decline over the next 12 months. But they don't foresee rates dropping below 5% anytime soon. If you want to buy a home, it's tempting to be in denial that this is happening. But as you start to accept that we're now in a time of higher rates, you can achieve closure (literally, when you close on the purchase of a home)."People are still working through their five stages of grief on this mortgage rate stuff," says Lisa Sturtevant, chief economist for Bright MLS, the real estate listing service for the mid-Atlantic region. "And I think you have to reach the stage of acceptance at some point that certainly ra...

The legislative committee tasked with helping to guide Colorado’s response to substance use has reconvened for the first time in four years to face a drastically changed drug landscape, a worsened overdose crisis and a series of worrisome data points about the state’s patchwork treatment system. The Opioid and Other Substance Use Disorders Study Committee — featuring six Democrats and four Republicans from the state legislature — met for the first time Thursday and will meet again over the coming months with the goal of forwarding potential bills to the full General Assembly when it reconvenes in January. The group had met for three straight years through 2019, but COVID-19’s emergence derailed its schedule. Cooking with a gas stove in your home is like living with a smoker, new research conducted in Denver finds

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 01:23:01 GMT

Cooking with a gas stove in your kitchen can emit as much benzene into a home as second-hand tobacco smoke, depending on ventilation and the size of the house, according to new research from Stanford University conducted in part in metro Denver. The findings showed the benzene produced when a gas stove is ignited migrated through homes — including into bedrooms that were the furthest from the kitchen — and reached levels above acceptable health benchmarks, said Yannai Kashtan, the lead researcher and a Ph.D. candidate at Stanford’s Earth Systems Science Department.“I’m surprised, not so much that we found benzene, but just how much we found,” Kashtan said.Researchers studied 87 homes in California and Colorado to determine how much benzene a gas stove released when in use and to look at how it spread throughout a house. They chose to study homes in the Denver area because of its proximity to a sizable oil and gas industry and because it was within drivin...
