PARIS (AP) — England captain Owen Farrell condemned the abuse targeted at teammate Tom Curry since he complained of being subject to a racial slur during the Rugby World Cup semi-final against South Africa.Curry alleged verbal discrimination from Springboks hooker Bongi Mbonambi last Saturday at Stade de France. World Rugby is investigating.Mbonambi’s participation in the World Cup final against New Zealand on Saturday is in doubt if he’s found guilty of misconduct.South Africa Sports Minister Zizi Kodwa has supported Mbonambi but social media has also been used to vilify Curry, prompting support for the flanker from England and his Sale Sharks club on Wednesday. When Curry was named to play against Argentina in the third-place game this Friday, Farrell said the online abuse was unacceptable.“Personally speaking, he has been first class like he always is. What isn’t understandable is the amount of abuse he has got, the effect that has had, not just on him,” Farrell ...California Gov. BANGKOK (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom had a surprise meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing on Wednesday after being warmly welcomed by other senior leaders in a display of friendliness that stands in sharp contrast to the dialogue between the United States and China in recent years. The governor is on a weeklong tour of China, where he plans to push for climate cooperation. Newsom’s trip as governor, once considered routine, is drawing attention as it comes after years of heightening tensions between the U.S. and China.“I’m here in expectation, as you suggest, of turning the page, of renewing our friendship and reengaging (on) foundational and fundamental issues that will determine our collective faith in the future,” Newsom said in brief opening remarks ahead of his meeting with Wang Yi, China’s top diplomat, earlier in the day.Though Newsom was in China to promote cooperation in curbing climate change, Chinese officials took the opportunity in welcome ...Stock market today: Wall Street gets back to falling and slumps toward 8th drop in the last 10 days

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is at it again. Fresh from being pictured shaking hands with Vladimir Putin, Orbán on Wednesday donned a hat he said had been sent to him by Donald Trump.“Look what came in the mail today! Thank you for your support, @realDonaldTrump!” Orbán wrote on X next to a photo of himself wearing a bright red cap with “TRUMP” written in capital letters. Handwritten on the front of the cap is “Viktor you are great” and what appears to be Trump’s signature. On the side are the numbers 45 and 47 — Trump was the 45th U.S. president and wants to be its 47th.The gift may be an apology from the former U.S. president, as earlier this week Trump mixed up the leaders of Hungary and Turkey. “There’s a man, Viktor Orbán, did anyone ever hear of him?” Trump said at a rally in New Hampshire. “He’s probably, like, one of the strongest leaders anywhere in the world. He’s the leader of Turkey.” Turkey’s president is Recep Tay...European Council summit live: EU leaders meet amid Israel-Hamas, Ukraine wars

BRUSSELS — It’s unprecedented: This summit of European Union leaders is taking place as peace is shattered around Europe and in the Middle East.Russia’s war in Ukraine grinds on after more than a year and a half. Tensions are again rising between Serbia and Kosovo in the Balkans after decades of uneasy quiet. Warnings of ethnic cleansing emerged from Nagorno-Karabakh, the Armenian enclave Azerbaijan recently annexed in a military offensive. And then there’s Israel war Hamas in Gaza, where violent war erupted amid the longer conflict earlier in October when Hamas launched an attack on Israel, and Israel retaliated with thousands of airstrikes on the Palestinian territory. As Israel prepares a ground invasion of Gaza, EU leaders have been struggling to find a common line on the Israel-Hamas war. And they’re concerned this conflict is overshadowing all others. With recent elections in numerous European countries reshaping the political landscape, this summit ...Police ID man arrested in connection with crucifix vandalism at Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston
