Young man gets life sentence for Canada massage parlor murder that court declared act of terrorism TORONTO (AP) — A Canadian man who pleaded guilty to the murder of a Toronto massage parlor employee received a life prison sentence Tuesday for what a judge described as an act of terrorism related to an internet subculture that fuels sexual loneliness into rage and misogyny. The man, who cannot be named because he was 17 years old at the time of the February 2020 stabbing that killed 24-year-old Ashley Noelle Arzaga and seriously wounded another woman identified only by the initials J.C., also was sentenced to three years for attempted murder, to be served concurrently. He pleaded guilty last year to both first-degree murder and attempted murder charges. The judge said the life sentence included no chance of parole for 10 years. In June, Justice Sukhail Akhtar ruled that the massage parlor attack amounted to an act of terrorism due to its links to so-called “incel″ ideology, which stands for “involuntary celibate.″ It is promoted through a fringe online subculture domina...

Troy Trojans once again rebound from rough start to make Sun Belt title game, facing App State The Troy Trojans lost on a Hail Mary the last time they faced Appalachian State and were perfect the rest of the way.Once again, the Trojans have rebounded strongly from a down-to-the-wire defeat and a 1-2 start to earn the right to host the Sun Belt Conference Championship Game. The opponent on Saturday just happens to be those Mountaineers (8-4).“I’m happy that App State won and we get to play them in the championship game, because who doesn’t love a good comeback story and a redemption story?” Troy safety Dell Pettus said. This season, the Trojans (10-2) have won nine straight games since losing in back-to-back weeks, 42-13 at then-No. 15 Kansas State and 16-14 to No. 24 James Madison. Last year they wrapped up coach Jon Sumrall’s first season with an 11-game winning streak, a Sun Belt championship and a No. 19 ranking — the first time Troy has finished a season ranked. The Trojans didn’t have quite the Hail Mary moment this time. But they fell to James Madison after missing one 49...

Denver among cities cleaning up homeless encampments. Advocates say it's not an answer PORTLAND, Ore. People had an hour to vacate the encampment, one of more than a dozen cleared that July day, according to city data.Whatever they couldn't take with them was placed in clear plastic bags, tagged with the date and location of the removal and sent to an 11,000-square-foot (1,020 square meter) warehouse storing thousands like them.“It can get hard,” said Taylor, 32, who has been swept at least three times in the four years he's been homeless. "It is what it is. … I just let it go.”A woman gathers possessions to take before a homeless encampment was cleaned up in San Francisco,...
