AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Coming off of a hot and dry summer that won't be our last, people are looking for new ways to save water and at the same time keep their grass green.Coming after a very hot and dry summer with tight water restrictions. The idea of artificial turf that you don't have to water might sound appealing. That idea seems to be spreading."Over double from last year to this year is what we've done in business so far," said Patrick Walthall, owner and operator of Lone Star Turf."Typically, we do have a slower season in the wintertime. As of right now. It's not looking like that's going to happen this year," added Walthall. In fact, he says his business gets busier when it rains a lot or hardly at all.According to Walthall, "I think the hotter and drier it gets. And also the wetter it gets. Mud is a huge deal."The turf he installs is made of polypropylene, but putting green surfaces are made of nylon to allow the ball to roll.Artificial turf can be expensive,Walthall quoted, "An ...Longhorns culture tested after loss to Oklahoma

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Texas started the season with an impressive 5-0 record that had them ranked No. 3 in the country. The Longhorns attributed their success in large part to an improved culture. That hot start and the ensuing momentum were stopped with a crushing defeat at the Cotton Bowl against Oklahoma. Now, after a bye week following the loss, that culture really gets tested. Bye week ahead of Houston game comes at right time for No. 8 Texas "That's when a lot more eyes - if they weren't on you at first they are now," said senior linebacker Jaylan Ford about Texas reacting to a loss. "Everybody is wanting to see how we'll respond. How we'll bounce back."The Longhorns actually moved up a spot in the Associated Press Top 25 to No. 8 during the bye week. The open weekend provided a reset for some players and what they say is a renewed focus."We didn't look at the [Oklahoma] game as something that's going to make or break us," said Longhorns senior linebacker David Gbenda. Vikings linebacker Jordan Hicks has been named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts against the Chicago Bears last Sunday. There’s a good chance the Vikings don’t earn the 19-13 win over the Bears without Hicks’ heroics. He led the Vikings with 10 tackles, intercepted a pass at a key moment and also returned a fumble 42 yards for a touchdown. It was the first time a Vikings player had an interception and returned a fumble for a touchdown in the same game since former safety Orlando Thomas did it against the Detroit Lions on Nov. 23, 1995.Asked about both splash plays, defensive coordinator Brian Flores heaped praise on Hicks for stepping up when the Vikings needed it most. The interception came shortly before halftime, as Hicks calmly located a ball floating in the air, then tracked it down to make the catch.“Almost baseball-like in center field,” Flores said of Hicks’ interception. “That’s an unusual play in our game. It does...Now open: Little Brazil, a cafe and market highlighting affordable regional Brazilian cuisine

When Charles Spies rides his bike on trails along the Mississippi River in St. Paul, he used to stop at a Caribou Coffee location near Upper Landing Park for a cup of coffee. But when that Caribou closed, Spies had an idea for what should replace it: Little Brazil, a cafe and market that would offer a taste of his home country. So he came up with a plan and pitched it to the building’s owner — whose wife, it turned out, is also from Brazil. Everything seemed to fall into place, Spies said.“It was kind of destiny,” said Spies, who grew up in Itapiranga, a smaller city in one of Brazil’s southernmost states. “What I’m trying to bring here is the flavors you’ll find in Brazil — in an easy way you can eat every day.”The exterior of Little Brazil, a new market and cafe dedicated to Brazilian street foods, is shown on September 26, 2023, before its official opening in mid-October. The store offers breakfast and lunch, plus a variety of imported groceries. (Jared Kaufman / Pioneer Press)Litt...Gophers’ Mara Braun named to Cheryl Miller Award watch list
