LUCKNOW, India (AP) — India stayed perfect and England remained awful as Mohammed Shami bowled a stunning opening spell to give the hosts a 100-run win at the Cricket World Cup on Sunday.Shami and Jasprit Bumrah shared an initial five wickets in a fiery exhibition of pace and seam movement in a six-over spell in the first powerplay and blew away the English top-order. That came after India had been put into bat and scored only 229-9 in 50 overs on a tough pitch with Rohit Sharma contributing 87 runs off 101 balls. The total proved more than enough for India to defend. Shami finished with 4-22 in seven overs, while Bumrah returned 3-32 in 6.5 overs, as England suffered yet another batting collapse, crashing to a fifth defeat in six games.Defending champion England was left languishing in 10th spot after a miserable outing in Lucknow against Indian pace and spin – all out for 129 runs in just 34.5 overs. India continues to fly high as the only unbeaten team in the tournament. The hosts...As college coaches turn into CEOs, X’s and O’s are replaced by dollar signs and bottom lines

Virginia coach Tony Bennett has been around college basketball for most of his life. His father, Dick Bennett, was a Division III coach during his formative years in the 1960s and ’70s, and later coached at Green Bay, Wisconsin and Washington State. Tony played for his dad in college before a brief career in the NBA and overseas, and then got his own coaching start on his bench with the Badgers, the father-son duo ultimately taking them to the Final Four. The game changed over Dick’s four decades in coaching — the shot clock and 3-point line were introduced, TV brought the game to the masses — but nothing like it has since the younger Bennett took over for pops at Washington State in 2006.The transfer portal along with name, image and likeness legislation have turned Bennett and his brethren into defacto CEOs, businessmen as much as coaches. Not only must they continue to recruit high school players, but they must also mine the transfer market while ceaselessly recruiting ...Live updates: Snow beginning to taper off leaving behind frigid temps

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — After being in office for over a decade, Mississippi state Sen. Dean Kirby got challenged in the Republican primary. He won with 70% of the vote. That was in 2003 — and it remains the last time Kirby faced an opponent. The longtime Jackson-area senator is on the ballot again this year without either a Democratic or Republican challenger. While the length of Kirby’s uncontested streak is unusual, his situation is not. More than four-fifths of Mississippi’s legislative candidates will have no major-party opposition in the Nov. 7 general election. And more than half of this year’s winners will have faced no other Republicans or Democrats in either the primary or the general election. “I think people are happy with the state and the way things are going,” Kirby, Mississippi’s Senate president pro tem, said in explaining the lack of challengers. Though Mississippi represents an extreme example, it highlights a national decline in competition f...Cybersecurity incident at Toronto Public Library leaves some services inaccessible

As part of a plea deal, she acknowledged stealing jewelry, watches and other items from residents of senior living facilities.Gwynne told the judge she began stealing items from patients’ rooms to support her cocaine habit while working as a nurse at an assisted living facility in 2004. She said she was later fired but kept going to facilities in Delaware County and Franklin County in her uniform and stealing from rooms. Investigators found more than 3,000 items at her home. The high court’s decision Wednesday follows a tangled history of appeals. The trial court imposed consecutive sentences, sa...Latest news
