Architect sues developer over unpaid work on planned tower in Denver’s Arapahoe Square One of the nation’s largest architecture firms has sued a Chicago developer, saying it’s owed $280,000 for work on a planned residential tower in Denver’s Arapahoe Square.Perkins & Will, which is also based in Chicago, filed the lawsuit against Akara Partners in Denver District Court last week. The firm is seeking to foreclose on a mechanic’s lien it placed back in June on 2126-2136 Lawrence St.Akara purchased that 0.64-acre site, currently a parking lot, in January 2019 for $5.5 million. While the site has sat unchanged for nearly four years, Akara has been pursuing development behind the scenes since at least early 2018, when it floated the idea of building 34 stories. The most recent version of the firm’s plans, submitted last October, call for a 23-story building with 438 residential units, as well as some ground-floor retail space. There would be 233 parking spaces, some of them underground, and a rooftop pool. The building would be called Kenect Denver, according to Akara’s w...

The queen of West African one-pot recipes has entered the chat

The queen of West African one-pot recipes has entered the chat By Yewande Komolafe, The New York TimesThieboudienne holds a special place among the cuisines of West Africa. This one-pot rice masterpiece is often referred to as the national dish of Senegal, yet its presence and popularity extend beyond any national borders. Its influence is powerful. So many of West Africa’s other great one-pot rice dishes — Ghanaian waakye, Gambian benachin and Nigerian jollof, to name just a few — are direct descendants of thieboudienne (pronounced CHE-boo-JEN), named for the Wolof words for rice (ceeb or thiebb) and fish (jën).Jollof rice’s popularity, especially in the diaspora, can be attributed to how quickly it comes together, essentially a sped-up version of thieboudienne. A great thieboudienne, however, resists all shortcuts. A great thieboudienne is practically an all-day affair.“This is the diva of rice cooked in a tomato broth,” said Nafy Ba Flatley, a Senegalese cook and small-business owner in San Francisco.Thieboudienne is what I like to call...

Opinion: Trump’s running on “retribution.” Why’s he gotta be so mean?

Opinion: Trump’s running on “retribution.” Why’s he gotta be so mean? ”I am your retribution,” Donald Trump told a gathering of ultra-rightwing conservatives earlier this year.He relishes the persona of the big bad wolf howling at the door; the menace to society lying in wait; the dark lord ready to terrorize the land. The idea that the president is supposed to keep every American safe from harm, foreign and domestic, is not a precept of the MAGA cult.In fact, cult members love that their leader’s 2024 campaign has been dubbed “the revenge tour.”The mugshot from his arrest at the Fulton County jail in Georgia is an apt depiction of Trump as evil incarnate.Guess he thought undecided voters would find his well-rehearsed stare so chocked full of virility that they couldn’t help but want him. However, what astute people recognize in his beady eyes is the soulless man promising vengeance if he takes over again.Trump’s sour puss reminds me of the last line of a Taylor Swift song:“Why you gotta be so mean?”It’s the perfect caption for the official photo of sta...

Letters: Who is to blame for the ugly play during the CU vs. CSU Showdown?

Letters: Who is to blame for the ugly play during the CU vs. CSU Showdown? CSU vs. CU turned uglyCSU Rams football continues to embarrass themselves and the state of Colorado. Their dirty play on Saturday night and disgraceful flopping by their defensive players in the fourth quarter made the game look more like an Italian soccer match than NCAA football. And, we all saw the vicious cheap shot.Instead of acting like adults by taking responsibility and apologizing for the horrific late hit perpetrated by safety Henry Blackburn on CU’s 2-way star Travis Hunter, Coach Jay Norvell and athletic director Joe Parker have spent the last two days attempting to gaslight us into not believing what we all witnessed with our own eyes. They insisted Blackburn “never intended to put anyone in harm’s way”, and “it’s not what we teach or coach”. However, the hit was clearly not the kind of “bang, bang play” coach Norvell would have us believe.  Champ Bailey, who happens to know a few things about playing the defensive ba...
